You've written an original ballad or hip-hop song however, you're in urgent need of a piano. We've all been there. There's a lack of trustworthy information about the top microphones to record piano, and that's why I put together this post.

The aim of this post is to review the best microphones to use to record a piano. I've compiled this list based on my experience in the last 20 years of making music.

In 2016 my band recorded our second major-label album at the renowned Dreamland Recording Studios in Upstate New York. Because we make use of a variety of synthesizers as well as digital pianos We wanted to create a genuine piano.

We were lucky enough to have access to fantastic microphones, as well as an incredible Steinway Grand piano.

The microphones used in recording the piano, and their positioning of them were crucial in recording a stunning sound.

I was able to learn and gain guidance from two phenomenal producers, Alex Aldi, and Albert Difiore. This was extremely beneficial as the experience of the two incredible producers is truly amazing.

We tested a variety of different microphones to record the piano before we settled on the final configuration.

Before I dive into the reviews, as with all my reviews, I want to provide my readers with my own knowledge.

Be aware that a good set of microphones, as well as an audio interface, are the essentials for shooting the covers of your piano.

Below is a clip of my team recording the second major label album that took us 30 days to record in an amazing studio. The video shows the microphone setup we used consisting of two U87s as well as a Steinway Grand.

Important: When recording your piano, it is recommended to make use of two microphones. Some are included in packages, whereas others require you to buy two. The reason to have two microphones is the recording can be done in stereo, and also move the microphones to make it as vibrant as it can be.

Without further delay Let's look at my top microphones for recording piano.

Rode M5 - Budget

The Rode M5s are extremely sought-after because they are multi-purpose condenser microphones that are suitable for recording drums, piano Acoustic guitars, and even for playing live.

These are the basic mics I'd recommend for the piano. They're not costly, but they produce a sound that's bright and crisp.

There is a substantial reduction in harshness at the higher end of the spectrum with these microphones as compared to a low-cost set. Due to this, I am of the opinion that the Rode M5s offer the top microphones for recording the piano with a small budget.

The M5 is designed to offer high quality and durability for an affordable cost.

Rode NT55 - A Step-Up From M-5

It is the Rode NT55 series is an improvement over earlier models in the Rode M5 series. They are offered in a 2- pack and are more likely to give more premium sound than the original NT55.

Be aware that having the best microphones to record piano doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to record the best. It is still necessary to have an ideal space, a good piano as well as a skilled sound engineer who has experience.

The microphones need 48V phantom power in order to function.

The build quality is generally excellent. You'll feel at ease touring or working with these in a studio. If you feel them with your fingers that these have been constructed well.

While you are able to record with only one microphone I strongly recommend purchasing the two-pack listed above and using both.

Below is a short video of an analysis of NT55 as well as the M5. For me, the NT55 is really a minor improvement.
