Turn your computer off and put it on the shelf. Analog is better.
With analog each note is something totally different. You can play a C over and over again and each one is gonna sound different in a nuanced way.
It’s a fact. Machines get old.
When a computer gets old, all it does is get slow and hot.
But when analog gear gets old—like a drum machine or a synth—they grow their very own personalities. The repetition of the machine starts to erode in a beautiful way.
Octave one knows about machine decay better than anyone.
We spoke to them recently at this year’s Bacchanle Festival about embracing the small wonders of the weathered machine.
So next time your laptop is making the same C note over and over and over, set it aside for awhile and let your analog gear be beautifully chaotic.
Octave One’s most recent album Burn It Down is out now via 430 West.
